GLOSSARY > ON-PREMISES

On-Premises

Software and technology located within the physical confines of an enterprise, rather than on remote cloud servers.

On-Premises (commonly referred to as "On-Prem") describes IT infrastructure, hardware, and software applications that are hosted locally within an organization's own physical data centers or facilities.

In an on-premises deployment, the organization retains total control over the infrastructure, maintaining ultimate compute sovereignty. This contrasts with public cloud deployments where hardware is shared and managed by third-party vendors.

For enterprises dealing with highly sensitive information - such as defense contractors or healthcare providers - on-premises deployments are often the only viable method for running advanced systems like Large Language Models while remaining strictly compliant with data sovereignty laws.
