GLOSSARY > AIR-GAPPED ENVIRONMENT

Air-Gapped Environment

A highly secure network that is physically isolated from all unsecured networks, including the public Internet.

An air-gapped environment is a stringent security measure employed to ensure that a secure computer network is physically and logically isolated from unsecured networks, such as the public Internet or standard corporate LANs.

The term "air gap" literally refers to the physical space between the secure system and any external connections. Data can only be transferred in or out of an air-gapped system via physical media (like encrypted USB drives) by heavily vetted personnel under strict security protocols.

In the context of AI, running models in an air-gapped environment provides the highest possible level of defense against cyber espionage, data exfiltration, and external zero-day exploits.
